QUEEN OF ANGELS PRIMARY SCHOOL September 2007 - Newsletter.
1. Welcome: I would like to welcome everybody back to Queen of Angels Primal School after the summer holidays and hope that we have a very fruitful year in school. A special welcome to our new pupils_ who have joined us from Poland, Romania, England, Thailand, Iraq, Brazil and Mauritius along with our new infants who are in Ms. Donegan and Ms. O'Rourke's classes.
We also welcome three new members to the teaching staff, namely, Ms.Gavin, Ms. O'Connor who are teaching the two fourth classes and Mr. Kelly who is teaching fifth.
2. Children's Safety: One of our main priorities as a school is to ensure the safety of your children while on the premises. Our ability to do so has been compromised on a few occasions since returning on Monday last, by parents and others driving into the school grounds in a careless manner while children were around. There is a sign inside the gate which says "Staff Parking Only". This is there to ensure the safety of the children aside from providing parking facilities for a large staff. It is essential therefore, that this sign is respected. We have had a few narrow misses in the past and do not want to see an accident happen on the premises. The gate will be closed during the day from now on and deliveries will be by arrangement only. Please use the car park in the shopping centre when .collecting your child. We appreciate the cooperation of the vast majority of the parents on this issue. Children and parents should use the pedestrian. paths at all times and not go through the car park. We are doing this in the interests of your children.
3. Sympathy: The staff and Board of Management would like to take this opportunity to sympathise with the Connors Family on the tragic death of Michael recently. Michael was a past pupil of the school. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.
4. Breakfast club will start back on Monday 10th September. For 50c a pupil may have a juice and toast before school begins.
5. Homework club will start back on Monday_ 17th September at 2.30pm. It is for pupils from 3rd to 6th classes only. It runs from 2.30pm to 3.15pm each afternoon from Monday to Thursday. A yellow application form will be given to the pupils, by Mrs. Whyte shortly and should be returned promptly as places will be limited.
6. Ladies Football: It is our intention to hire a bus to take pupils to me All-Ireland Ladies Football final in Croke Park on Sunday 23rdSeptember if there’s sufficient interest. Match tickets are only 5 euro for children. The cost of tile bus has yet to be determined. Please leave your name with Mr. O'Driscoll. Parents willing to help out will also be required. The cost for any parent supervising will also be 5euro.
7. All-Ireland Football Final Forecast Draw: Lines costing 2 euro are currently on sale. The school will receive one third of the revenue from our sales. Please support as we have a number of small projects needing funding.
8. Holidays: Holiday arrangements will be made known as soon as they have been sanctioned by the Board of Management Mid-term break is from 26th October to 5th
November. In February 2008 the school will close on Thursday and Friday 15th and 16th February. All remaining days will be taken during the final term. You will be informed of these as soon as possible.
9. Congratulations to past pupil, Andrew McNulty who has been signed up as a goalkeeper by Scottish Premier League side, Invemess Caledoman Thistle. We wish him every success.
Andrew was an outstanding goalkeeper in his time here in Queen of Angels.
10. Fir Bolg Tournament: A selection of players from fifth and sixth classes will represent the school in this annual football tournament organized by Philip McCabe of St Olafs GAA Club. More details to follow in the next bulletin.
11. All pupils should now be coming to school fully prepared with all of the necessary items for class. Our new Queen of Angels homework journal is available from the office at a cost of three euro. Pupils should bring a healthy lunch with them to school each day along with a drink in a plastic beaker. Friday is a treat day where children are allowed to have a chocolate bar. Sweets, fizzy drinks, crisps and chewing gum are prohibited. Homework must be signed every night by a parent. The new journals have a section at the end where notes may be written if contact needs to be made with the class teacher or the Principal. All pupils must have a hand towel in their bag each day for hygiene purposes.
12. Many thanks to Eilish and Darren English and their helpers who arranged for a very smooth distribution of uniforms and tracksuits during the month of August. Any items that were not available then, will be in the near future. You will be informed of same
13, Summer Works.. The junior block yard and path leading to it from the front of the building along with a section inside the main gate have just been resurfaced. A €20, 000 grant was made available by the Department of Education and Science. This has resulted in a shortfall, which has to be met by the Board of Management. To help offset this cost I am asking for your support for fundraising done during the year. It is hoped to put some games on the yard surface for the children shortly.
,
The school hall has been painted in it’s entirety by past pupil, Eoin Dornan, during the past few weeks. Thanks Eoin for a job well done.
14. We are lucky in Queen of Angels to have the services of Kelly's bus to bring the pupils from Ba1lyogan, Mount Eagle, Sandyford Hall Mount Eagle and Sandyford Village areas to and from school every day. Please respect the service and obey the rules at all times. Seat belts must be worn at all times by the children.
15. We wish our school gardener, Dermot Comolly a speedy recovery from recent injury and hope to see him back in the school before long.
16. Preparation for First Holy Communion will begin much earlier this year and to this end a meeting will take place on Monday 11th September at 7.30pm in the Church of the Ascension. All pupils making First Communion must be represented at the meeting. I thank those parents who volunteered to help out with the programme. Parents and children will be involved in preparing for a number of Sunday Masses during the year. Fr. Philip who is coordinating the programme will explain all at the meeting.
