On the sunny morning of May 27th, our school community gathered in the junior yard to celebrate our annual ‘Intercultural Day’. This is a cherished day in our school calendar. We value the many different cultures that make up our school community. This year just under 40 nationalities were represented.
The day began with our parade. All the children emerged from their classrooms, holding banners representing the countries of our school community. The children, parents and staff dressed in a variety of colours and traditional dress and jerseys. We all proudly stood behind the banner of our native countries, cheering, waving flags and playing instruments. We walked together around our beautiful school grounds in the sunshine.
Next, parents and guardians were invited into our hall for a coffee morning. The parents had the chance to chat, enjoy refreshments and admire the pupils’ international themed projects and artwork on display.
Niamh and Michael from Irish Aid joined us for the coffee morning. Niamh spoke about the work Irish Aid do, both here and abroad and Michael performed for the parents. We have been lucky to work with Irish Aid several times during this academic year and we look forward to bringing the Senior classes to their headquarters for workshops.
An intercultural themed whole school assembly then took place. Niamh spoke to the children and Michael performed African dances. There were then wonderful singing and poetry performances by every class.
Every class then enjoyed delicious Teddy’s ice cream which was especially appreciated on such a hot and sunny day. Thank you to our SCP Coordinator Peter Lennon who organised this special treat.
Lastly, every class took part in an African drumming workshop presented by Michael from Zambia. Each child had the opportunity to play their own assigned drum and learn different rhythms and beats. Niamh kindly gifted every child a prize of a ruler or rubber for taking part.
A big thank you to all the parents, school staff and children for coming together to celebrate this special day in Queen of Angels.
